The 2026 MARRCH Seminar on Ethics is a monthly, members-only consultation group designed to address ethical challenges in alcohol and drug counseling. Running from January to December, these interactive sessions will provide a confidential space for members to discuss real-world ethical concerns and receive expert guidance aligned with state and federal ethics regulations.
This seminar will be a space for members to bring questions and concerns related to ethical practices in the field of alcohol and drug counseling. The hosts will facilitate discussion and provide feedback in line with state and federal ethics guidelines. The goal of this seminar is to ensure the highest quality of service delivered to clients and ensure professional integrity.
Session topics will cover Contemporary Ethical Concerns as brought by seminar participants. Topics will include:
Use of Apps in counseling
Use of Blogs in counseling
Issues in Employing former clients
Social Media contacts with current clients
Social Media contacts with former clients
Exceptions to Confidentiality
Relevance of Red Flag Law
Navigating Clashes between CFR-42 & HIPPA
Relationships with relatives of clients
Ethical issues in terminating care
Abandonment vs. Limiting care -- a clash of ethical duties and other ethical dilemmas
Plus, other ethical issues which participants have experienced in their practice or about which they have concerns or questions.
The goal of the seminar is to provide a confidential & safe place for MARRCH members to recognize ethical challenges in practice, and to share options for handling ethical dilemmas.
Sessions will not be recorded to maintain a confidential and open dialogue.
